UPPER SCHOOL CURRICULUM

From mathematics to world languages, Brentwood Academy is committed to imparting lifelong skills. Our teaching philosophy focuses on critical thinking, developing natural talents, broadening knowledge, and fostering spiritual growth, ultimately preparing students for the world beyond BA.

ADVISORY

Advisory groups meet weekly and serve as a space for students to grow individually while building meaningful relationships with peers and faculty. The three main goals of advisory time are group bonding, faith-building, and character development.

COLLEGE COUNSELING

To be effective, college counseling shouldn't wait until senior year. We provide educational workshops beginning in 8th grade and continuing through senior year with increasingly more involved and individualized programming, encouraging students to self-reflect, discover their passions, develop their minds, and take charge of their futures.

As students encounter opportunities in athletics to work hard, form disciplined habits, and collaborate with others, desiring to excel in their sport at the highest level becomes a natural byproduct. Our coaches make decisions motivated by what is best for the team, realizing that the team outcome will ultimately determine opportunities for individual athletes. Our team-centered approach results in students willing to play a role that will most benefit the team.

While winning is the goal, it is not our purpose. Our purpose is to seek to glorify God in everything we do while focusing on the kind of person each of us is becoming: nurturing and challenging the body, mind, and spirit of each whole person, developing students who are accustomed to balancing a variety of activities while approaching all of life integrated with their faith.

FINE ARTS

Offering an array of classes and teams from introductory to audition-only levels, the Fine Arts department provides opportunities to excel in visual arts, band, speech and debate, vocal arts, dance, and more. With multiple groups achieving recognition on the national stage, students receive exceptional instruction while both pursuing their passions and discovering new talents.

Many teachers in BA’s Fine Arts department have had professional careers in their field prior to teaching, bringing their expertise to the classroom, along with the integration of their faith. Brentwood Academy’s Fine Arts department seeks to nurture and challenge each whole person – body, mind, and spirit – to the glory of God by developing student’s talents, offering opportunities for creative expression while recognizing God as the ultimate Creator.

ROTOTICS

Brentwood Academy's Iron Eagles are a world-class team. Since the inception of the Robotics program just over a decade ago, more than 200 BA students have competed on an Iron Eagles Robotics Team. The award-winning, upper school program holds nine Tennesssee State Championship titles. On a larger stage, the upper school Iron Eagles have claimed six awards at the VEX Worlds Championships in the last five years.

Our graduates have gone on to some of the nation's top collegiate engineering programs where they continue to build upon the skills learned and confidence gained at Brentwood Academy.

UPPER SCHOOL
CHRISTIAN LIFE

Students in the upper school begin each day in Scripture reading and prayer before beginning curriculum in their first block class. Students will take a course in Bible and Christian living every year during their tenure in upper school at BA. Outside of the classroom, upper school students gather weekly for chapel to engage in collective worship and to hear a devotion or teaching from a Christian Life faculty member, guest speaker, or peer. Follow-up discussion is often held in advisory group meetings.

Perhaps the highlight of upper school Christian Life is the Senior Theme Verse Retreat. Every summer, just before the beginning of school, the senior class gathers for a time intentionally focused on the Lord, renewal, and fellowship. In addition to the programs and classes available, Christian Life at Brentwood Academy involves the classroom, the playing field, the band room, and the hallways for we believe that everything is spiritual and Jesus Christ gives everything purpose.

Every faculty and staff member at BA has a personal and growing relationship with Christ. While the religious beliefs of each student will be respected, the school will continuously teach Biblical truths and values.

ACADEMIC SUPPORT

Student Academic Support is structured by team members responsible for monitoring the academic progress of each student and promoting effective communication between students, grade chairs, faculty, and parents. The department supports students taking ownership of their academic progress and making appropriate decisions toward their academic goals.

Specialized study halls in middle school promote a philosophy of individual responsibility and encourage each student to value and contribute to his or her educational experience. Students develop the skills needed to reach academic and individual goals, become leaders within the school community, and pursue successful and productive lives grounded in Christian values.

WINTERIM

EXPERIENCE THE WORLD

Winterim is an upper school course designed to challenge students to expand their knowledge beyond present experiences and encourage a love of learning. This is accomplished by a small group of students working closely with a faculty member in various non-traditional travel courses. Winterim provides opportunities to fulfill the school’s mission through exploration in academics, arts, outdoors, and athletics. Participation in Winterim is required annually for all upper school students.
