MAGNUS HEALTH

Brentwood Academy uses the Magnus Health Software/App to maintain student health forms and medical information. Updated records are required for each school year and allow students to participate in BA’s physical education and sports programs. Access to the Veracross parent portal at the end of June/early July will include sign in information for the Magnus Portal, which can be found in the toolbar and links directly to student health information.

Complete the health tracker and upload any required material prior to July 24, 2023. TSSAA requires all pre-participation physicals to be dated/signed after April 15th of the incoming year. Doctor’s offices will have this form.

Please contact Kim Elliott with any questions.

WANT TO READ TOGETHER?
SUMMER READING ENRICHMENT

During the month of July and early August, Mr. Lyle Husband (9th and 11th grade English teacher) will offer a weeklong summer reading session for each upper school grade level. During this time, the students and Mr. Husband will read the required summer reading book aloud and discuss it intensively.

BA Students will be expected to demonstrate knowledge of summer reading texts in a variety of ways during August and September.  Several assessments early in the school year are tied to summer reading, and this opportunity will be a very valuable step toward a great start of the school year. This enrichment program is open to any upper school student, organized by grade level, and has the potential to positively impact the students’ first quarter averages. The cost of the program is $100.

In addition to reading together during this time, students will also learn valuable reading strategies and complete graphic organizers to aid the understanding of character analysis and important themes. In short, students who take advantage of this opportunity will be more prepared and confident as they begin school in August. Each student needs to bring the required summer reading book and pens and pencils. All meetings will be in the theatre.

MATH

Without practice, students may lose new mathematical knowledge or see a decline in basic skills over the summer months. With consistent practice students do not require as much review and are able to better connect new concepts with previously learned material. Therefore, summer math work is required for all middle school students.

Please see below the requirements based on your child’s grade.

For any questions concerning summer math work, please contact Bonnie Hall, Mathematics Department Chair.

GRADE 6

For entering grade 6, to best prepare for math at Brentwood Academy, all incoming 6th grade students are encouraged to work through the summer skills sharpener workbook. This workbook provides students with an opportunity to reinforce math concepts learned through the previous school year. We recommend students work three to four times a week in their workbook throughout the summer. The workbook is $19; you may order by clicking the link below.

For Algebra I and Honors Algebra I, students should expect a test during the first week of school assessing the skills that were covered on the assignment.

GRADES  9-12
For entering grades 9-12, there is no required summer work for all students. However, if a student has requested HONORS math and was either (1) not recommended for honors OR (2) took standard math the previous year, a packet is required and should have been picked up by the all school assembly. These packets must be completed by June 30. Extra packets are available from Mrs. Cathy Locke in the Upper School office.

VISION SCREENING

As a service to all incoming students, we provide evaluations of visual skills that are not often assessed in a routine vision exam but are important for reading and processing.

These evaluations will take place on June 14 and July 12, 2023 from 8:30 AM – 2:30 PM in the downstairs study hall.

Evaluations, which take about 15 minutes, will identify areas where visual skills can be strengthened, thus increasing the opportunity for academic success. Please use the below link to sign up for a vision screening.
